Nigerian doctor defends British helper jailed for racist tweet

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian doctor, Hene Enyi, has come to the defence of a child minder, Mrs Lucy Connolly, after her appeal to be freed from a 31-month jail term failed.

Lucy, 42, was jailed over a racist tweet and pleaded guilty to an online rage against migrants following the Southport attacks last October.

Her husband, Ray Connolly, who is a Conservative councillor, filed an appeal against the jail sentence but lost at the Royal Courts of Justice.

According to The Telegraph, Ray described his wife as “a good person.”

During the appeal, Lucy said she made the tweet out of anxiety following the killings of three children she witnessed at a dance class.

Lending her voice to rally support, Enyi described Mrs Connolly as a good person who had shown kindness to her and her family since their arrival in the UK.

The Nigerian woman said Mrs Connolly helped her family’s application for British citizenship and also offered character references, as well as looking after her daughter.

“Lucy is simply the loveliest, kindest British person I know. My mum and dad in Nigeria know all about her because I speak about her all the time,” Enyi said.

“She was so good to us when we arrived here from Nigeria. She loved my daughter like her own child.”

Lucy was jailed over a social media post where she said, “Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f***ing hotels full of the b******s for all I care…”

She later deleted the post and blamed it on “a moment of extreme outrage and emotion,” adding that she acted on malicious information.
