With a career spanning three continents and multiple high-stakes infrastructure transactions, Nigerian-born female lawyer Yetunde Amodu, is making significant contributions to international finance and project law.
According to a Sunday statement, Amodu, currently an Associate at Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP, recently advised the Canada Infrastructure Bank on a C$217m equity investment in a joint project with Nova Scotia Power Incorporated.
The project involves the development of a major transmission line aimed at advancing Canada’s renewable energy infrastructure.
It noted that as part of the deal, Amodu also supported the structuring of an equity loan to Wskijinu’k Mtmo’taqnuow Agency Ltd., which represents 13 Mi’kmaw First Nations, ensuring indigenous participation in the energy project.
The statement noted that prior to joining Gowling, Amodu worked as a lead associate at Carey Olsen LLP in Jersey, where she advised global financial institutions, such as Wells Fargo, J.P. Morgan SE, and Lloyds Bank Plc, on complex financial structuring, real estate transactions, and regulatory compliance.
Her work involved over £1bn in acquisition financing and oversight of regulatory approvals from the Jersey Financial Services Commission, especially in the wake of the EU’s evolving financial regulations post-Brexit.
“Her legal career began in Nigeria at TEMPLARS, a leading commercial law firm. There, she advised on high-profile infrastructure deals, including a $3bn financing for Nigeria LNG Limited and a $1.3bn deep-sea port project under a 45-year concession arrangement. Both transactions were recognised at the Project Finance International Awards for their scale and innovation,” the statement added.
Amodu holds an LL.M. in Corporate Law from New York University School of Law and an LLB from Cardiff University. Her academic work included a stint at the Office of the General Counsel at NYU, where she focused on US regulatory frameworks and institutional compliance.
In addition to her transactional practice, the statement said Amodu had supported anti-corruption efforts in West Africa.
It emphasised that while serving as an Associate Consultant at Control Risks in Lagos, she conducted due diligence investigations for oil and gas companies to manage litigation and compliance risks.
