The caretaker committee of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section of Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL) was inaugurated on March 4, 2024, following the dissolution of the previous Executive Committee by the Nigerian Bar Association National Executive Council during their meeting on February 29, 2024, in Jos Plateau State.

The distinguished members of the caretaker committee, entrusted with overseeing SPIDEL’s affairs, include Steve Adehi SAN as Chairman, Yakubu Philimoen SAN as Alternate Chairman, Ben Orji as Secretary, Ronke Adeyemi and Eva Amadi as Members.

The decision to replace the former Executive Committee was made due to allegations against its chairman, John Aikpoko-Martins, who was accused of undermining the authority of the NBA President, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau OON, SAN, and the council itself. It was reported that SPIDEL initiated several lawsuits challenging government decisions without proper authorization during his leadership.

President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, during the inauguration of the caretaker committee, expressed his gratitude to the members for accepting the responsibility and acknowledged the challenges they will face. He highlighted the importance of their role, including organizing SPIDEL at the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in August 2024. He assured the committee of the NBA’s confidence in their abilities, noting that the NEC had carefully selected them.

In addition to replacing the former Executive Committee, the NEC also directed the withdrawal of ongoing cases initiated by SPIDEL without proper authorization. These cases included a lawsuit to remove the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy from office for alleged violations of the National Youth Service Corps Act and a challenge against the federal government’s imposition of an annual levy for a certificate of proof of vehicle ownership.
