Operatives of the Edo State Commamd of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, have arrested six suspected illegal miners in the state.
The Commandant of the agency in the state, Akintayo Saidi Ayinla, disclosed this at a press briefing on Thursday in Benin City.
Ayinla said the suspects were arrested for various illegal mining activities across the State.
He said four of the suspects who were from Zamfara and Sokoto States and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja were arrested at an illegal mining site located in Egbetu Ososo, Akoko Edo Local Government Area.
He also added that the other two suspects were arrested in December 10, 2025 at Ewu while allegedly conveying suspected illegally mined minerals (Dolomite) in a truck with registration number ABJ 999XF.
The NSCDC boss in the state gave the names of the suspects as Muhammad Yahuza, 18, Zamfara State, Nathan Halily, 18, Zamfara State, Abdulmajid Yusuf, 20, Sokoto State, and Abdulia Maundy, 18, Abuja while others are Musa Salisu Aliu and Nadia Shuaibu.
He said the suspects were arrested by the Mines and Steel Monitoring and Surveillance Team of the Command.
Anyila disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects arrested in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area were working under the instruction of one Mr Casker who is currently at large.
He said the suspects had confessed to working at the site without any authorization or legal documentation.
On the suspects arrested at Ewu in Esan Central Local Government Area, the NSCDC Commandant alleged that the documents they presented to justify the transportation of the mineral were forged.
While reiterating the Corps’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s critical mineral resources, he warned that the agency would not allow economic saboteurs to destroy the economy of Nigeria.
According to him, illegal mining does not only rob the nation of revenue but also fuels insecurity, environmental degradation, and the destruction of host communities.
He, however, stated that investigations are ongoing, and that all the suspects would be prosecuted in court to serve as a deterrent to others involved in illegal mining and related economic crimes.
He reassured the public that the NSCDC, in line with its statutory mandate, will continue to intensify surveillance, enforcement, and strategic operations to curb illegal mining across Edo State.
