Nigeria Police Must Be Cautious In Enforcing Stay at Home Proclamation by The President and The Various State Governors – Sabastine Anyia Esq.

The primary function of the Nigerian police is to protect lives and properties of the Nigerian citizens, maintain law and order in the society and for detection of crimes among others. It is because of these functions that police are generally referred to as, “our friend, your friend”.

The simple question is: can any Nigerian truly hold on to this axiom that police is “our friend or your friend”? Your answer is as good as mine.

Throughout my research, I have not seen anywhere even in our constitution that police can kill at their discretion. The highest is that they have the power and authority to arrest offenders. The Nigerian police have the authority to arrest anyone who commits a crime.

We have seen of recent the reckless manners the Nigeria police are enforcing the stay at home order by Mr. President and the various state Governors. To some of them it’s another means of making money. To others, it’s an opportunity to take the lives of their perceived enemies and to some a period to display their might.

It is on that note that I’m wondering where the police derived their power to be killing innocent Nigerians at this trying period on a flimsy excuses that they disobeyed the stay at home order of Mr. President.

Assuming without conceding that these innocent people killed by the police on their allegation that they disobeyed the stay at home order is correct, why were they not arrested and detained so that they can be tried in the law court where they will have the opportunity to defend themselves.

For the past two weeks and four days now the number of innocent Nigerians killed by the Nigerian police is more than the number of deaths the corona virus has recorded. Just this afternoon (Wednesday 15/4/2020), the Nigerian police shamelessly killed two (2) young men of about 20 and 22 years at New Tyre market, Nkpor, Anambra state on allegation of not staying at home.

As at today, the Nigerian police and the security forces have killed 21 people while the corona virus has taken only 11 lives. Out of this number, 12 deaths were recorded in Kaduna state, 3 from Abia state, 2 from Anambra, while Ebonyi and Katsina state recorded one each.

How many Nigerians shall be killed before the Nigerian government call them to order. In India, those who disobey the stay at home order are flogged and chased to their homes. In Italy, Spain and other countries, the defaulters are arrested. Why is it that in Nigeria policemen are killing our citizens.

I urge the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the various state Governors to bring the police officers who are killing our innocent citizens to book forthwith.
