The Niger State Government has issued a reminder to scrap metal dealers and scavengers about the approaching deadline for registration, warning that failure to comply with the directive will attract sanctions.
According to the Secretary to the Niger State Government, SSG, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, the registration exercise, which commenced at his office on December 22, 2024, will close on November 15, 2025.
The SSG stated that the move is intended to ensure proper regulation and monitoring of scrap metal activities across the state, warning that non-compliance will result in sanctions, including business closure, arrest, and prosecution.
He explained that registered scavengers are required to operate with approved identification jackets and ID cards, adding that those found without proper identification will face legal action.
The statement said, “no further extension will be granted and failure to comply within the stipulated deadline will attract appropriate sanctions, including the closure of business premises, arrest and prosecution of defaulters.
“It is imperative for all registered scavengers to note that they must operate only with the approved identification jackets and ID cards issued by the registration authorities. Any individual found scavenging without proper identification will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
The SSG further disclosed that the administration of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago remains committed to ensuring that all economic activities in the state, including scrap metal collection and recycling, are properly organised, regulated, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy without compromising environmental safety or public order.
The state government therefore urged all concerned individuals and associations to take advantage of this final window of opportunity to regularise their operations before the expiration of the deadline.
