New Book “Heels & Ladders” Helps Female Professionals Rewrite Their Career Story By Chinyere Okorocha

In a world where talented women are still being overlooked, talked over, or quietly pressured to choose between ambition and family, I wanted to offer a bold and timely response.

My new book, Heels & Ladders: A Career Acceleration Handbook for Female Professionals, now available for pre-order, is a practical, honest guide for women who know they are capable of more – but feel stuck, unseen, or unsure of their next move.

Over more than three decades, I have built a successful career as a senior partner in a top-tier law firm, led teams, sat in boardrooms, mentored hundreds of women, and served as Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum. Across all these roles, I have seen a familiar pattern: brilliant women doing the work, but not receiving the recognition, opportunities, or fulfilment they deserve.

I wrote this book because I got tired of watching capable, hardworking women shrink in rooms they had every right to own. I’ve seen women whisper powerful ideas while others boldly present half-formed ones. I’ve also seen women quietly step off the career ladder, not because they lost ambition, but because the pressure to “have it all” made them feel they had to choose between their families and their future.

A Working Handbook, Not Just a Book

Heels & Ladders is designed as a working handbook – something that can sit open on a desk or beside a laptop as a practical companion on your career journey.

The book is structured into 14 chapters, each opening with a real, relatable career story: being passed over for promotion, struggling with visibility, navigating office politics, or juggling family responsibilities. After each story, I break down the lesson and offer tools, exercises, and assignments that prompt you to reflect, gain clarity, and take concrete next steps.

The tone is firm but compassionate – like a wise big sister who has walked the path and is now sharing both warnings and shortcuts.

This book is for the woman who knows in her heart that she was made for more. The woman who is tired of second-guessing herself, tired of over-delivering in silence, tired of feeling guilty for wanting success and a meaningful personal life.

    Clarity, Confidence and a Roadmap

Drawing from my mentoring work with mid- to senior-level female professionals across sectors, I address recurring themes such as:
    • Gaining clarity on your next step
    • Becoming more visible without compromising your values
    • Navigating workplace politics
    • Building a strong personal brand and network
    • Pursuing ambition without burning out or giving up

Rather than offering vague motivation, Heels & Ladders invites you to slow down, think, write, and decide. The chapter exercises are designed to move you from “I know I should do something” to “this is exactly what I will do next.”

    From Courtroom to Career Coach

With over 33 years in legal practice, I have risen to senior partner and sector head at an international law firm while raising a family and serving in multiple leadership roles. Through my Heels & Ladders Career Mentorship Club, I coach female professionals in law, finance, health, tech, corporate organisations and entrepreneurship on visibility, negotiation, leadership, and work-life balance.

Many of the stories and tools in this book are drawn from real-life conversations, adapted and anonymised, but firmly grounded in reality.

Women don’t need more pressure. They need language for what they are experiencing, a framework for making decisions, and a reminder that they are not alone.
