NBA-SBL Chairman’s Message to Members, Colleagues
At the threshold, I recognize that we are in the yuletide season and, hereby, on behalf of the Council of the NBA-SBL, wish each and every one of you a Happy and Peaceful Holiday Season.
This Newsletter is to keep you, our stakeholders, apprised about the recent activities of the Section. In addition to information available on the Section’s website, we intend to also employ this medium to keep you informed about recent and impending activities.
As you undoubtedly know, the SBL has had a storied past under the leadership of leading and even legendary business law practitioners – we salute them.
On behalf of the newly elected NBA-SBL Council, we here by assure all our stakeholders that the present Council will build on the very well established and enviable legacy of the Section. We will also be an innovative Council.
In consonance with being a specialist Section, the Council recently inaugurated four new Committees, namely: Agriculture; Corporate Counsel; International Trade Law; and Mining Law, respectively under the distinguished Chairmanship of: Mr. Soji Awogbade, Senior Partner, Áelex; Mrs. Bidemi Ademola, Legal Director & Company Secretary, Unilever Nigeria Plc; Mr. Val Uche Obi, SAN; Principal Partner, Alliance Law Firm; and Professor Peter Akper, SAN, OFR, Research Professor of Law, NIALS. The Committees were established to foster specialization by legal practitioners in the subject matter areas and, further, with respect to Corporate Counsel to further formalize the mutually advantageous relationship between the NBA-SBL and in-house counsels.
Regarding upcoming events, for the first time, the NBA-SBL and NBA-SLP are planning a joint program to take place in the first quarter of 2019. Also, true to tradition, various SBL Committees also have programs planned for early next year, including the Arbitration & ADR Seminar scheduled to hold in Benin; Insurance & Pensions Members’ Forum; and Banking, Finance & Insolvency Forum. These are quite apart from the Section’s flagship event – the 13th Annual International Business Law Conference scheduled to take place in Lagos between June 26-28, 2019.
We are also in the process of establishing collaborative relationships with certain major players in the business community and ask that you stay tuned! On a related note, the Section’s Vice Chairman, Mr. Ayuli Jemide, is spearheading a proposed collaboration with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NDMB) towards further implementing its mandate.
In closing, it is a rare privilege and honour to serve, and on behalf of Council, we thank you for your support of the Section over the years and, especially, give kudos to our corporate and law firm sponsors.
NBA-SBL, wish each and every one of you a Happy and Peaceful Holiday Season.
