Yakubu Maikyau, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has accused the ‘AllEyeOnTheJudiciary’ campaigners of deliberately plunging Nigeria into anarchy through unsubstantiated allegations against the judiciary.Speaking on the Arise News Channel’s ‘THISDAYLIVE’ yesterday, Maikyau slammed the campaigners for making generalized corruption accusations without evidence. He argued this erodes public confidence in the judiciary, which upholds the fabric of the nation.
Maikyau maintained the judiciary has demonstrated strength of character despite poor treatment and funding constraints. He reiterated calls for specific proof to sanction corrupt judges rather than vague public allegations.
The NBA President questioned how many judicial officers have been convicted of corruption compared to the judiciary’s size. He contended the campaigners are even worse by refusing to provide details to address the issues raised.
The remarks come amidst legal tussles following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration of Bola Tinubu as winner of the February 25 presidential polls. Challengers Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are contesting the results at the election tribunal.
In anticipation of the September 16th verdict, supporters of opposition parties launched ‘AllEyeOnTheJudiciary’ campaigns on social media and billboards. They have warned the judiciary against compromising the verdict.
Maikyau argues these activities preemptively undermine the judiciary without basing accusations on facts. By whipping up anti-judiciary sentiments, he believes the campaigns push Nigeria towards lawlessness and anarchy.
The NBA President maintains anti-corruption efforts should follow due process, not blanket allegations without evidence. His strong condemnation spotlights concerns that populist agitation risks destabilizing Nigeria’s democracy and judiciary
