The Nasarawa State Police Command has dismissed media reports alleging that armed herdsmen attacked Agboda Village in Mararaba Udege, disrupting a church crusade and forcing worshippers to flee.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, described the viral reports and accompanying video as “a gross misrepresentation of facts,” insisting that no herdsmen attack occurred anywhere in the state.
According to the command, preliminary investigations showed that the incident in question was a case of robbery, not an invasion by armed herdsmen.
The statement explained that on November 24, 2025, around 7 pm, a motorcyclist was assaulted by unidentified criminals on a feeder road leading to Agboda Village. The victim sustained machete injuries, and his motorcycle was stolen.
“Upon receipt of the report, the DPO immediately contacted vigilante members in the area, who in conjunction with the police pursued the suspects.
“The criminals abandoned the stolen motorcycle and fled,” the command stated, adding that the victim is receiving treatment at a hospital while the motorcycle has been recovered.
The police also disclosed that the person who recorded the viral video, Daniel Ukpo, is currently in custody and has admitted that the incident had no connection with herdsmen or any disruption of a religious event.
“He has confirmed that there was no herdsmen attack and no disruption of any crusade,” the statement noted.
Commissioner of Police Shetima Jauro Mohammed urged religious leaders to exercise caution in making public statements and to avoid comments capable of inciting tension. He further appealed to journalists and residents to verify information before publication and to refrain from spreading sensational or unverified reports that could trigger unnecessary panic.
