The Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria, MOUN, Lagos State branch, has condemned the actions of an irate mob that led to the death of a senior police officer in Lagos.
It will be recalled that the incident occurred on October 19, 2024, at WEMPCO Junction, Mobil Road, Agege, when a group of commercial motorcyclists reportedly attacked a police team after a traffic accident.
The police in a statement said the incident began when a commercial motorcyclist collided with the rear of a goods-laden truck, resulting in the motorcyclist’s death. Following the crash, a group of motorcyclists gathered at the scene, allegedly intending to attack the truck driver and set the vehicle ablaze.
A police team was dispatched to the location to restore order and prevent further violence. However, during their efforts, the officers were attacked, and an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who led the team was fatally assaulted.
Meanwhile, the police is currently investigating the incident, with efforts ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Meanwhile, in a statement, yesterday, Publicity Secretary of MOUN, Raji Rasak, regretted the incident and condemned the mob action.
He said: “MOUN is totally opposed to resorting to self-help, mob action, and jungle justice in seeking to redress real or perceived wrongs in road traffic accidents. The union calls for calm and emphasizes the importance of cooperation with law enforcement to ensure proper investigation and justice.
“There are ongoing efforts with the Lagos State Government to promote self-regulation among commercial motorcyclists through unionization. This initiative aims to register members, enhance regulation, and prevent future occurrences of mob action,” he added.
The union extended its condolences to the family of the deceased police officer and the Nigeria Police Force, noting that it would pay a condolence visit to the Lagos State Police Commissioner.
