Sokoto State police command has arrested some suspects in connection with the protest held in Sabon Birni, headquarters of Sabon Birni local government in Sokoto state, over the death of their traditional ruler while in the hands of gunmen.

The deputy public relations officer of the command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Isah Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement made available to our correspondents in Sokoto.

He said some miscreants in the area had set ablaze private and public utilities, including the 25 housing units constructed by the state government to serve as accommodation for officials posted to serve in the area.

According to the statement, the command would thoroughly investigate to unravel the individual groups behind the protest in the area.

“Police will not fold arms to see disgruntled elements disturbing public peace in the name of protest, anyone found wanting in connection with the protest will certainly face the full wrath of the law.

According to the statement, a detachment of mobile police personnel has been dafted to the area to keep peace, while calling on law-abiding citizens in the area to go about their normal business as police are there to protect them.

The Commons, however, warned the general public against taking laws into their own hands, especially on matters that require judicial processes, says the statement.

It could be recalled that on Wednesday, a traditional in the area was attacked and kidnapped by suspected gunmen along Sokoto/Sabon Birni road while returning to his domain after a meeting in the state capital.

The traditional ruler died after spending 25 days in the hands of his captors, which, however, sparked protests in the area.
