Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, says she will press charges against a man who groped her during a public event in Mexico City.
The incident happened on Tuesday near the National Palace, where Sheinbaum was meeting supporters.
A video shared online shows a man walking up behind her, trying to kiss her on the neck and touch her inappropriately. She quickly moved away, and a member of her team stepped in and arrested the offender whose name has not been released publicly.
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Sheinbaum said she decided to take legal action to set an example and stand up for other women. “If I don’t file a complaint, what will happen to other Mexican women? If they do this to the president, what will happen to all women in our country?” she said.
Sheinbaum added that she had faced similar harassment before, even before becoming president. “I have experienced it before, when I wasn’t president at the time I was just a student,” she said.
“I decided to press charges because this is something we as women experience in our country.”
She also revealed that the man had allegedly harassed other women in the crowd, saying it was important to take a stand.
