LPPC Rejects “Blue Silk” Title, Reaffirms SAN as Highest Rank in Nigerian Legal Profession

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has officially rejected the use of a purported legal designation called “Blue Silk”, stressing that it has no legal basis and does not exist under Nigerian law. The committee reiterated that the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) remains the highest professional distinction for lawyers in the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday, February 12, 2026, signed by Kabir Akanbi, Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, the committee said its attention was drawn to the recent introduction and use of the so‑called “Blue Silk” title within certain quarters of the legal community.

The LPPC, a statutory body established under the Legal Practitioners Act, emphasised that the conferral of the SAN title is its sole responsibility and is governed strictly by the provisions of the law and committee guidelines. It clarified that any parallel, intermediate, or alternative rank including “Blue Silk” has no statutory backing.

No Recognition for “Blue Silk”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the LPPC does not recognise any parallel, intermediate, or alternative rank styled as ‘Blue Silk’ or by any other nomenclature purporting to suggest official status, hierarchy, or recognition within the legal profession,” the statement said.

The committee warned that lawyers who create, parade, or claim such titles may be acting in breach of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023, and could face disciplinary action for conduct unbecoming of a legal practitioner.

Reaffirming the Prestige of SAN

The LPPC reaffirmed that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria remains the most prestigious rank in Nigeria’s legal profession, marking outstanding achievement and contribution to the law. It stressed that only the LPPC has the authority to confer the SAN rank and that the title continues to symbolize legal excellence and professional distinction.

This clarification comes amid recent discussions and online commentary about alternative rankings within the Bar, but the LPPC’s position makes clear that no substitute or unofficial rank can supplant the SAN title in Nigeria’s legal hierarchy.
