Human rights lawyer Favour Enuji has appealed for the release of a 17-year-old boy, Chiemere Nneji, from police detention in Delta State. Nneji was convicted of rape by a family court on November 29 and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment at a juvenile facility.
However, over a week later, Nneji remains detained at the Agbor police station instead of the state’s Children Remand Home as ordered by the court. According to Enuji, the teenager is being held with mentally ill and hardened criminals under inhumane conditions.
Enuji stated Nneji is naked, injured, feverish and convulsing in his cell. He called the detention a “travesty” and violation of the court judgment and Nneji’s rights under Child Rights Law. The lawyer alleged police claim holding Nneji on court orders.
Enuji has appealed to the Chief Judge, Women Affairs Ministry, Justice Ministry and rights groups to secure Nneji’s release to the Children Remand Home per the initial judgment. The Chief Judge’s office confirmed Nneji remains in police custody without explanation.
Delta State is yet to appoint a Justice Commissioner six months into Governor Oborevweri’s administration. Enuji hopes urgent action will be taken to transfer the convicted teenager to the appropriate juvenile facility.
