The Association of Lawyers with Disabilities in Nigeria (ALDIN) has indeed achieved a significant milestone through the recent landmark judgment by the Kebbi State High Court. In this ruling, three individuals were sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal rape of an 18-year-old deaf woman². ALDIN’s National President, Ikem U. Uchegbulam, Esq., rightly commended the court for upholding the rights of persons with disabilities and ensuring justice for the victim.
This courageous decision by Hon. Justice Shamsudeen Jafar sends a powerful message that disability rights and the dignity of persons with disabilities are non-negotiable and will be protected by the law. The perpetrators, who exploited the victim’s vulnerability, have been held accountable for their reprehensible actions. ALDIN also acknowledges the tireless efforts of the prosecution team, led by Barrister Faridah Muhammad, and the diligence of the Nigeria Police Force in ensuring justice is served.
ALDIN’s call for continued collaboration among stakeholders to recognize and defend the rights of individuals with disabilities is commendable. As lawyers with disabilities, they understand the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in accessing justice.
