The son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, has been confirmed as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government following the resignation of the former council chairman, Tunde Azeez.

Azeez, who had been on medical leave barely a month after his administration was inaugurated on July 27, 2025, formally stepped down on Wednesday over persistent health challenges.

His resignation letter was read by the Leader of the House, Adeshina Haruna, during plenary at the Agege Council Chamber, after which lawmakers unanimously voted to confirm Abdul-Ganiyu — who had been acting in the role — as substantive chairman.

Abdul-Ganiyu had earlier indicated interest in contesting for chairmanship ahead of the 2025 local government elections but was initially dropped after opposition trailed his candidacy.

It was gathered that Obasa’s son had effectively overseen mobilisation and grassroots engagement since Azeez went on leave

Council legislators said their decision was guided by the need to avoid a leadership vacuum and to sustain ongoing administrative engagements in the council.

The lawmakers also praised Azeez for his contributions while in office and wished him full recovery.

In his acceptance remarks, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa pledged to consolidate ongoing initiatives and deepen collaboration with community stakeholders to enhance service delivery in Agege.

During the same plenary, members reviewed the council’s committee structure and oversight operations, stressing the need for improved transparency, accountability and monitoring of developmental projects within the local government.
