A yet-to-be-identified man has been arrested after he was accused of raping a teenager, a student of a school, in the Ojodu axis of Lagos State.
City Round gathered that although the incident had occurred about two months ago, the suspect was nabbed in the school premises on Wednesday when the survivor sighted him and raised the alarm.
A video clip shared with our correspondent on Wednesday showed visibly angry residents who were taking the suspect to the Ojodu Division station located at the Grammar School Bus Stop, along Ogunnusi Road.
One of the residents who spoke with City Round under the condition of anonymity said the suspect was a shoe repairer in the area and had also attempted to rape another student of the school.
“The man came to the girl’s house and asked her for water, saying that he was thirsty. When she went to bring it, he forced his way in and raped her. The girl didn’t tell anyone, not even her parents. But she wrote the whole thing in a diary, and someone saw it, and that was how it became known.
“It was just today that the school principal knew about this whole issue when the suspect walked into the school, and the girl recognised him. As for the girl he tried to rape, she said she went for a church programme and went to the restroom to ease herself, but she didn’t close the door, thinking that it was a girls-only toilet.
“The suspect had followed her, barged into the restroom and tried to force himself on her. Fortunately, she was able to hit him and run out. I don’t know this guy’s name, but I see him around here, walking about and acting like he is homeless. Some people said he has a shop where he mends shoes,” the resident disclosed
According to reports by The Punch, a top source in the Lagos State Office of Education Quality Assurance said, “Our temporary investigation through telephone conversation revealed that the rape case did not happen in the school.
“The survivor sighted the rapist within the school complex and instantly recognised him, and she quickly called the attention of the school counsellor, and he was eventually apprehended and taken to the police station. The survivor informed the school that the case happened in her house.”
Efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful, as an officer said she was unavailable when our correspondent called.
Messages inquiring about an update of the case were also not responded to as of the time of filing this report.
In May, the Lagos State Government confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area of the state.
The state Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said it was working closely with the Nigeria Police Force to ensure justice is served in the case that has sparked public outrage.
