The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has launched an outreach effort to locate and support a young woman who alleged she was sexually assaulted, following a viral video that sparked public concern.
In an official statement, the agency said it was aware of multiple reports and social media tags related to a video in which the woman shared her experience on TikTok. Efforts were immediately initiated to reach the survivor, provide support, and establish her location. Contact attempts were made through available channels, and outreach is ongoing.
“We want to state clearly that we are actively making efforts to reach the survivor to offer immediate support and intervention,” the agency said. It urged anyone with credible information to contact the agency via verified social media platforms.
The Lagos government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on domestic and sexual violence, stressing that sexual assault is a criminal offence under Nigerian law and that survivors are entitled to protection, care, support, and justice.
The video, which circulated widely on X and other platforms, triggered public outrage and calls for swift intervention, with users tagging government agencies and security authorities demanding protection for the young woman.
A follow-up statement confirmed the agency had established contact with a close friend of the survivor, who had been discharged from the hospital. The agency thanked the public for providing helpful information through direct messages.
However, it was later determined that the alleged incident occurred in Ogun State, outside Lagos’ jurisdiction. All relevant information has been forwarded to authorities in Ogun State, where the Ogun State Police Command is now handling the matter.
The Lagos agency, which coordinates responses to domestic and sexual violence, provides confidential reporting channels, emergency response services, psychosocial support, and legal referrals. It urged residents to remain law-abiding and assured the public that all reports are treated with urgency and confidentiality.
Advocates emphasize that sustained public awareness and accessible reporting mechanisms are critical in addressing sexual and gender-based violence, particularly in urban areas where social media often serves as a first point of disclosure.
Authorities in Ogun State have yet to release further details on the investigation.
