Lagos Assembly warned against obstructing commission chairman’s duties

The National Industrial Court on Thursday ordered the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, not to obstruct, disturb or frustrate the Chairman of the House’s Services Commission, Olawale Mogaji, in the discharge of his duties.

According to a statement on Friday, the court sitting on Thursday ordered that Obasa should halt action pending the motion of exparte filed by Olawale Mogaji, is heard by the court.

Justice R. H. Gwandu, in his ruling, directed that any disobedience to the court order shall be treated as contempt.

Gwandu also ordered that the claimant immediately serve the defendants and put them on notice, and the case was adjourned to August 24 for a hearing.

He said, “Having looked at the processes before me, l hereby order that the defendants should halt any action within the matter pending the hearing of the motion on notice of the interim injunction is granted as prayed.

“The claimant should immediately serve the defendant and put them on notice that the return dated is 24th August 2022 for hearing.

“An order of the interim injunction restraining the first and second respondents whether, by themselves, their servants or any person howsoever described designated and whether acting as the personal assistance or press secretary of the first and second defendants from interfering with, obstructing, disturbing and/or frustrating the claimant in the exercise of his lawful duties as an appointee/employee of the fifth defendant pending the determination of the motion on notice filed along with this application.”

It was reported that the Speaker on July 14, in a voice vote at the plenary session, pronounced the sack of Mogaji as the Chairman of the commission.

Mogaji had sought to redress his disengagement through legal means, hence the court’s orders.
