Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have killed the younger of two brothers abducted on January 2 at their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, Edo North.
The father of the deceased, Tahir Momoh, confirmed the death of his son, Abu Momoh, to PUNCH Online on Monday.
He said the corpse was discovered on Monday morning and that the victim was buried the same day.
“It is true that he was killed. He is the younger of the two brothers, and he has been buried. The elder brother is still with the kidnappers. This is a very sad day for us, and we hope his elder brother will be released to us,” he said.
However, a short video made available to PUNCH Online from the community showed that the deceased was killed by his abductors at Orley River, along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp.
A source said the victim may have attempted to escape before he was shot.
I was told he attempted to escape and was shot by the kidnappers,” the source said.
The elder brother, Ibrahim, a medical doctor, is still being held by the kidnappers. He was abducted alongside his brother while they were trying to enter their compound before they were taken into the bush.Ibrahim is currently undergoing his housemanship at the Edo State Teaching Hospital, Auchi.
A resident of the area, who identified himself as Abdul, urged the police to intensify surveillance in the Igbira Camp area, describing the rate of kidnapping there as alarming.I think it is time for the police to beam their searchlight on the Igbira Camp community in Auchi, as the number of kidnappings in that area is alarming.
“The problem is that some youths do not want to work and are looking for easy money. The earlier these criminal activities are curtailed, the better for Auchi and neighbouring communities.
“The government should also take decisive action so that the people can see that they matter,” he said.Confirming the incident via a phone conversation with our correspondent, the Edo State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the deceased was found dead in the bush during a police combing operation.
She added that the family identified the victim as the younger brother of the abducted medical doctor.
“I can confirm that the deceased was found dead in the bush during bush-coming and the family identified him”, Ikoedem said.
