The Katsina State Government has disclosed that some communities in the state are already taking to self-help by negotiating with bandits for their safety and freedom.

The state’s Commissioner for Information Bala Zango made this known on Thursday in a chat with Niger State correspondents, where he revealed that terrorism in the state has been reduced by 70 per cent.

Zango, who attended the quarterly meeting of Commisioners of Information of the All Progressives Congress in the country hosted by the Niger State Ministry of Information on the theme “Strategic Communication and Policy Alignment,” added that the remaining unrepentant terrorists operate within the fringes of the border areas of the state and forests, noting further that due to the agrarian nature of Katsina residents some of them were negotiating with the bandits to enable them engage in their farming activities.

According to the commissioner, while the state government maintains a position of no negotiations with bandits zero, however, the government was willing to reintegrate and rehabilitate any bandit that embraced peace.

He said, “25 local governments were under insecurity out of 34 local governments, but now they have been pushed to the borders. They only operate in the borders and the forests.

“The communities are negotiating with the bandits, but the state government maintains its stance on not negotiating with bandits.

“But any bandit who has decided to lay down his arms and embrace peace, then government will accept them into the society,” he said.

The Commissioner further assured that any bandit that embraces peace would be rehabilitated, and the state government would give him support and assistance.

“Any bandit that decides to lay down his arms would be accepted into the society and would be given a lot of rehabilitation. We will give them support. We will give them proper education and whatever it takes to make them a full member of the society,” Zango said.
