Kano State commissioner resigns, pledges loyalty to Kwankwaso

Amid political realignment in Kano State, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar-Mata, has officially resigned from the cabinet of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Kofar-Mata, a leader of the Kwankwasiyya scholars and close associate of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, quit his position on Sunday, insisting he “cannot continue to work under the government that derailed from the ideology that brought it to power.”

In a statement posted on his verified social media handle, Kofar-Mata wrote:

“Salam! I wish to categorically state that I hereby resign my appointment as the Commissioner and Member of the Kano State Executive Council.

“I took this decision in good faith, as I cannot continue to work under the government that derailed from the ideology that brought it to power.

“On this note, I extend my gratitude to the national leader of the NNPP, Engr. Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the entire people who stood with us and made the journey successful. Alhamdulillah! Long Live NNPP – Kwankwasiyya Movement!”

Kofar-Mata’s resignation comes less than 72 hours after Governor Yusuf left the opposition NNPP, citing a deep internal crisis threatening the survival of the party.

While several political appointees had openly declared their loyalty to the Governor, the former commissioner has made clear his disagreement with Yusuf’s decision.

The Kwankwasiyya senior scholar was among those who initially stood firm with Senator Kwankwaso’s decision to remain in the NNPP, viewing the Governor’s impending move to the APC as a betrayal of Kwankwasiyya trust.

Although Senator Kwankwaso has advised political appointees to “conditionally” accept the Governor’s plan to join the APC, Kofar-Mata’s resignation may trigger a wave of exits from the cabinet.

The Guardian reliably gathered that other commissioners who may soon resign include those for Humanitarian Affairs, Adamu Aliyu Kibiya; Youth and Sports, Mustapha Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso; Internal Security, AVM Ibrahim Umar; Special Duties, Nasiru Garo; and Women Affairs, Amina Abdullah.
