During a send-off dinner hosted by the Body of Benchers on Thursday night, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, revealed the appointment of Hon. Justice Mary Peter Odili, JSC (rtd), as a member of the National Judicial Council (NJC). The occasion celebrated Justice Odili’s recent conclusion of her tenure as Chair of the Body.
Effective from April 1, 2024, the appointment aligns with Paragraph 20 of Part One of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. The National Judicial Council is constituted by several members, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria as the Chairman, the next most senior Justice of the Supreme Court as the Deputy Chairman, and the President of the Court of Appeal, among others.
Justice Mary Peter Odili’s appointment falls within the classification of “five retired Justices chosen by the Chief Justice of Nigeria from the Supreme Court or Court of Appeal.” Her nomination underscores her illustrious career and valuable contributions to the Nigerian judiciary.
The National Judicial Council holds significant responsibility in overseeing the appointment, promotion, and discipline of judicial officers in Nigeria, while also safeguarding the independence and integrity of the judiciary. With Justice Odili’s extensive experience and expertise, her inclusion on the council is anticipated to enhance its effectiveness and mission.
