The Johnny Agim, SAN Foundation (JASAN Foundation), a leading non-profit organisation championing Mentorship, Sponsorship, Reforms, and Advocacy within Nigeria’s legal sector, has once again demonstrated its commitment to “Building a Lasting Legacy” through the successful hosting of the second edition of its annual flagship event – The Legacy Dialogue 2.0 – in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital City.

Themed “Institutionalisation of Mentorship in the Legal Profession: A Strategic Blueprint for Professional Development,” this year’s Dialogue builds upon the strong foundation established during the maiden edition in 2024, deepening conversations around mentorship, professional identity, and legacy in the legal profession.

In his welcome address, the Foundation’s President, Mr. Johnny U. Agim, SAN, reaffirmed the Foundation’s enduring vision of nurturing a generation of ethical, competent, and legacy-driven legal professionals equipped to redefine the standards of excellence in the Nigerian legal landscape.

“As an advocate passionate about legal reforms and building a lasting legacy that prepares young generations of lawyers for excellence, The Legacy Dialogue has become a veritable platform for achieving that goal,” Mr. Johnny Agim, SAN stated. “It brings together legal experts, academics, and stakeholders to explore innovative approaches to mentorship and sponsorship within the profession.”

He noted that the 2025 edition goes beyond dialogue to propose a structured and enduring framework for mentorship as a cornerstone for professional growth and institutional continuity within the Bar and Bench.

“At a time when new wigs and young lawyers face significant challenges navigating their career paths, and the profession grapples with sustaining its tradition of excellence, the need for a structured, enduring mentorship framework has become even more urgent,” he said.

The Learned Silk, Mr. Johnny Agim, SAN further reiterated the Foundation’s goal of creating a network of 500 well-rounded young lawyers, who will, over the next decade, attain positions of distinction as Senior Advocates of Nigeria or Judges of Superior Courts of Record, thereby becoming institutions in themselves.

Highlighting key milestones since the inaugural edition, Mr. Johnny Agim, SAN recalled the launch of the ₦1 Billion Endowment Fund for Legal Education Sponsorship and Scholarship in 2024, which has already yielded tangible results.

“I am happy to report that the seeds sown in 2024 have begun to bear fruit. Our scholarship beneficiaries have gained admission into the Nigerian Law School, and after their Call to Bar, they will be integrated into the mentorship programme we are launching today,” Mr. Johnny Agim, SAN announced.

The President also unveiled the Foundation’s online mentorship platform, a one-stop digital ecosystem designed to manage mentorship activities with professionalism, supervision, and accountability.

He disclosed that the #Legacy500 Elite Sponsorship Programme aimed to expand its target from 11 beneficiaries in 2024 to 30 in 2025. However, following an 8-week application period and a rigorous two-phase screening process that attracted 86 applicants, only 15 met the prequalification criteria, and 9 were finally selected by the Panel of Judges for the 2025/2026 JASAN Foundation Scholarship Awards covering full tuition at the Nigerian Law School.

“Our screening process is deliberately rigorous. We aim to admit only well-prepared students who, when exposed to our mentorship faculty, can only excel,” he noted.

Expressing gratitude to partners and supporters, Mr. Johnny Agim, SAN extended special appreciation to His Excellency Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, Executive Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Kanu Godwin Agabi, SAN, CON, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and Engr. Prince Arthur Ikpechukwu Eze, OFR for their unwavering faith in the vision.

Mr. Johnny Agim, SAN concluded with a call to collective action:

“As I said at the inaugural launch, let us not just dream change – let us bring the change we desire. This is not a journey I can take alone; I invite everyone who has not yet joined us to do so as we work together towards building a lasting legacy in the legal profession.”
