The theme for International Women’s Day is, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.” We recognise the contribution of women and girls around the world who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all. In Nigeria, we have women such as Jennifer Uchendu, Mariam Lawani and Temitope Okunnaure advocating for a sustainable ecosystem in the country and we laud these women on the impact they have made in teaching, promoting, and fostering a sustainable way of living in the country.
As we continue to explore the link between gender equality, social equity and climate change, it has become apparent that they are interdependent; a sustainable future tomorrow cannot be realised without equity and equality today. According to the UN, women and girls disproportionately experience the impacts of climate change with women depending more on, yet having the least access to the natural resources, funds and necessary supplies essential for livelihood. This inequality means that women are more vulnerable to the impacts of global emergencies compared to their male counterparts.
Recent events, such as the National Assembly rejecting all five bills supporting the inclusion of women shows that as a society, we still have a long way to go in achieving the gender equality that is vitally needed for us to advance and grow as a nation that supports diversity, inclusivity, and equity. We must continue to support women such as Chioma Agwuegbo, Ayisha Osori and groups such as the Feminist Coalition and join the fight for the equality of women in all facets of society.
Each year, women continue to make more and more strides in the social, political, technological, and economic advancement of society and it is important that as we continue to evolve, we all play our part, not just with words of solidarity but with actions. Standing alone, we are not enough, but together, we can collectively break the bias as we continue to forge the path towards equality.
