Nearly a month after banned drugs were recovered from an SUV that mowed down two pedestrians in Lutyens’ Delhi’s Chanakyapuri, police have arrested a Nigerian national, named as Ndubuisi, for allegedly supplying the contraband to the car’s driver.
The accident, which took place on the morning of August 10, occurred when the SUV allegedly hit and killed two men sleeping on a pavement near Gyarah Murti in Chanakyapuri.
The 26-year-old driver, Ashish Bachchas, was arrested on the spot, while the vehicle was seized.
According to The Indian Express, Ndubuisi, aged 40, was arrested in Southeast Delhi’s East of Kailash.
The officer further said it was suspected that Ashish was supplying drugs after receiving consignments from Ndubuisi, which he distributed at parties and to individuals.
Ashish initially told the police that he was unaware of the drugs found in the car. However, he later admitted that he had received them from a Nigerian national residing in Southeast Delhi.
A team of officers from the police station was then constituted to search for the suspected Nigerian national, the officer said.
The team eventually nabbed Ndubuisi from his residence before subjecting him to interrogation.
“He had come to India in 2010 on a student visa. His visa expired in 2012, but he continued to stay in the country illegally. He also lived in Goa for a few years before returning to Delhi,” the officer added.
“Over two dozen people connected to both accused have been questioned. We believe more arrests will be made in the drug supply case in the coming days,” the police said.
