Indian authorities have arrested seven Nigerians in separate operations for drug trafficking and residing as foreigners without valid documents.

Two Nigerians, Chidiebube Ije, 31, and Promise Onana, 39, were caught with cocaine and MD drugs worth Rs 19.45 (approximately N34.7m).

The police said a Nigerian couple allowed Ije and Onana to use their rented apartment at Chaitanya Nagar in Powai for drug deals.

Five other Nigerians were arrested by Mangalam police last Saturday in their rented houses at Sultanpet Neeli Pirivu on Mangalam Road without any passports or valid visas.

According to the Times of India, Vincent, 35; Chikezie Innocent, 43; Chinweubalinus, 52; Andrew Ugochukwu, 25; and Anthony, 41, were charged before a magistrate.

Thereafter, they were remanded in the Puzhal Central Prison on Sunday.

Police investigations revealed that the Nigerians have been staying in Tirupur city since 2021, purchasing banian clothes and exporting them to Nigeria.

“They did not have passports and valid visas to stay in the country. We arrested the five after they confessed that they were staying in the country without any valid documents,” a police officer was quoted in the report.
