Imo LG bans non-govt approved vigilante groups

The Chairman of Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, Prince Marcel Amadioha, has ordered the immediate disbandment of all non-government-approved vigilante groups in the area.

This is even as the council has announced the formation of Autonomous Communities’ vigilante groups in Imo State by Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The warning came in a statement signed by the Secretary of the Ohaji/Egbema LGA, Ogini Harcourt Uche, dated June 18, 2025, which PUNCH Metro obtained on Thursday.

The LG boss warned that any existing non-government-approved vigilante groups that defied the order within the council area would be arrested and prosecuted.

Furthermore, he warned those planning to form new vigilante groups to shelve the idea to avoid the full wrath of the law.

According to him, the council was aware that some people were planning to form personal vigilante groups with which they planned to unleash mayhem on residents of Ohaji/Egbema LGA, adding that they knew the identities of such people.

The statement quoted the council boss as saying, “The Chairman warns that any existing non-government-approved vigilante group that defies the order in Ohaji/Egbema LGA will be arrested and prosecuted. He also cautions those with the intention to form new vigilante groups to shelve the idea to avoid the full wrath of the law.

“The council has received intelligence reports indicating that some unscrupulous individuals are attempting to form personal vigilante groups under the guise of unapproved vigilantes to cause chaos and harm to peaceful residents of Ohaji/Egbema LGA. We are aware of their identities, and if they attempt to repeat their past actions of killing innocent people, the government and security agents in Ohaji/Egbema LGA will take swift and decisive action. They will face the full consequences of their actions this time around”.

Meanwhile, the LG chairman called on all well-meaning individuals in Ohaji/Egbema to support the newly appointed government vigilante groups in the discharge of their duties to ensure security and protection of lives and property in their various autonomous communities.
