Former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has refuted rumors circulating online regarding his death.
His Personal Aide, Adeyeye Ajayi, issued a brief statement to the media on Monday, confirming that the 89-year-old retired Army general is alive and in good health. He expressed bewilderment about the source of the false speculation
Additionally, close associate Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi dismissed the rumors as the work of mischief makers. Gbagi revealed that he recently had a conversation with Gowon, who is currently in London and remains hale and hearty.
The death rumors initially surfaced following the passing of Professor Samuel Gowon Edoumiekumo, a former Vice Chancellor of Niger Delta University, who shares the same surname as the ex-Head of State.
General Gowon took proactive steps to clear the air, assuring the public that he is very much alive. He expressed gratitude to those concerned about his well-being and urged the public to disregard the false news.
At the age of 89, General Yakubu Gowon holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s oldest living former Head of State. He led the country from 1966 to 1975 before being ousted in a bloodless coup by his successor, Murtala Muhammed
