The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has confirmed that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is currently in its custody in connection with an ongoing investigation.

Recalled that the former Kaduna State governor submitted himself to a similar anti graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday where he has been undergoing questions till latest information by ICPC.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Commission’s Head of Media and Public Communications, Mr. J. Okor Odey, the anti-graft agency disclosed that El-Rufai remains with the commission as of the close of work on February 18, 2026.

“The Commission wishes to state that Malam Nasiru El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, is in our custody as at the close of work today, Wednesday, the 18th day of February, 2026,” the statement read.

“He is in the custody of the Commission in connection with ongoing investigations.”

While the ICPC did not disclose specific details of the investigation, it noted that further updates would be provided in due course, in line with its mandate and established procedures.

El-Rufai served as Governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During his tenure, he initiated wide-ranging reforms in public service, education, and urban development, but his administration also faced criticism and controversy over security challenges, restructuring policies, and financial management.

Prior to becoming governor, El-Rufai held several high-profile public offices, including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory between 2003 and 2007. Over the years, he has remained a prominent and outspoken figure in national politics.

The ICPC, established in 2000, is one of Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption agencies, empowered to investigate and prosecute offences related to corruption and abuse of office in the public sector. The Commission has in recent years intensified its scrutiny of former and serving public officials as part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability in governance.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official reaction from El-Rufai or his associates regarding the development.

Observers say the outcome of the investigation could have significant political implications, given El-Rufai’s influence within national politics and his continued engagement in public discourse since leaving office.

The ICPC reiterated its commitment to due process. “The Commission remains guided by the rule of law and assures the public that investigations are being conducted professionally and without prejudice,” the statement added.
