ICC condemns sanctions by Trump govt

The International Criminal Court, ICC, has promised to continue its judicial work after United States President Donald Trump signed an order to impose sanctions on its staff.

The ICC, in a statement on Friday, said it “stands firmly” by its personnel.

In a statement the global court said: “The ICC condemns the issuance by the US of an executive order seeking to impose sanctions on its officials and harm its independent and impartial judicial work.

The Court stands firmly by its personnel and pledges to continue providing justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of atrocities across the world, in all situations before it,” it added.

Trump’s order accused the ICC of “illegitimate and baseless actions”, after the court issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza, which Israel denies.

Trump’s order also authorised economic sanctions against the ICC.

The order grants Trump broad powers to freeze assets and issue travel bans against ICC staff and their family members.

This comes in response to the court’s decision in November to issue arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant.

Both men were accused of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
