    Protocol: –

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, Good afternoon.

It is with a profound sense of respect, reflection, and gratitude that I welcome you to this Afternoon of Tributes and the symbolic Closing Gong Ceremony in honour of a towering figure in Nigeria’s economic landscape, our dearly departed Dr. Pascal Gabriel Dozie, OON, CON, former President of Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, now Nigerian Exchange Group.

On behalf of the Board, Management, staff and entire ecosystem of Nigerian Exchange Group, I extend our deepest condolences to the Dozie family, his loved ones, and indeed, all who had the honour of working with or learning from PGD.

Today, we gather not to mourn, but to celebrate a life lived with purpose, vision, and immeasurable impact.

Dr. Dozie was many things, a banker, an entrepreneur, an economist, and a philanthropist. But for us at NGX Group, he was first and foremost a builder of institutions. His presidency of the Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange marked a pivotal chapter in our history. With foresight and steady leadership, he helped lay the foundation upon which we have built a world-class Exchange, one that serves not just Nigeria but inspires confidence across the African continent.

His tenure was defined by foundational work, by systems built, policies shaped, and cultures instilled. His leadership helped usher in reforms that introduced transparency, broadened participation, and set the Exchange on a trajectory of sustainable growth.

There’s a saying that the famous English scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, made popular, which I think captures PGD’s impact that I will paraphrase. It says that we see further by standing on the shoulders of giants. In his quiet, methodical way, Mr. Pascal Dozie was a giant who pioneered many of the innovations that others built on and that have transformed businesses and lives in Nigeria.

Mr. Pascal Gabriel Dozie’s tenure as President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange was similarly marked by modernisation, increased participation by local and foreign investors and growth of the capital market. These are all initiatives that the current board and management of the Nigerian Exchange are pursuing and so, you could say that we are also standing on the shoulders of this giant to see the path to the future development and progress of our capital market.

In banking, the bank he set up, Diamond Bank, pioneered the technology driven interconnected online banking that we now take for granted. In telecommunications, he recognised the transformational impact of GSM and led the Nigerian investors that initially invested in MTN plc. In investment, he was a co-founder of Nigeria’s first private equity equity firm, Africa Capital Alliance. He had so many firsts that opened paths for so many others and made life and business easier for all Nigerians.

And through platforms like the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), he bridged the worlds of business and public policy, helping to shape an economic environment where enterprise could thrive and voices could be heard. Yet for all his institutional accomplishments, what truly set Dr. Dozie apart was his humanity.

Sir Dr. Pascal Gabriel Dozie was an icon, a mentor and a family man. With his loving life partner of over five decades, he raised five fine men who are treading the entrepreneurial path like he did. I urge you, Uzoma, and the greater Dozie family to follow the example your father set in integrity, in innovation, and in entrepreneurship and make him and your mother proud at all times. We thank you sincerely for sharing him with us. His life was a gift to this nation. His legacy belongs to all of us.

As we reflect, let us be inspired to lead with purpose, to live with humility, and to build with the future in mind, just as he did.

May the soul of Pascal Gabriel Dozie rest in peace, even as his example keeps inspiring us.

    Thank you all.

    Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Kwairanga

    Chairman

    Nigerian Exchange Group.
