Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has dispelled rumours of a political rift between him and his mentor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, insisting that their relationship remains strong and unwavering.
Speaking on Tuesday in Madobi during an event commemorating the 69th birthday of the former governor and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Governor Yusuf described Kwankwaso as a “God-given leader” whose ideals continue to shape the governance and development of Kano State.
“Those within and outside trying to create a quarrel between me and our leader, Engineer Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, will not succeed,” Governor Yusuf said in his address to a gathering of party supporters and dignitaries.
He continued, “We will continue to follow the legacy and principles of the ‘Kwankwasiyya’ movement because Kwankwaso is a God-given leader. His wisdom and vision remain a guiding light for our administration.”
The statement comes amid months of speculation surrounding an alleged internal power struggle within the NNPP, following the emergence of a faction known as “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” (Abba Stand on Your Feet). The group, reportedly led by former Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Baffa Bichi, and former Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Salisu Digol, was believed to be advocating for greater independence in the governor’s decision-making, sparking concerns of tension between Yusuf and Kwankwaso.
Political observers had interpreted the movement as an attempt to shift the balance of influence in the state government, potentially challenging Kwankwaso’s dominant role in NNPP affairs.
However, Governor Yusuf’s latest remarks appear to put such concerns to rest. He emphasized the enduring influence of the ‘Kwankwasiyya’ movement and expressed gratitude for Kwankwaso’s mentorship.
“Engineer Kwankwaso is not just a political leader but a visionary whose leadership continues to guide the progress of Kano State. We are proud to uphold the Kwankwasiyya values of discipline, service, and good governance,” Yusuf said.
The governor also offered prayers for the NNPP leader, wishing him long life and good health.
“We pray that Almighty Allah grants our leader more years in good health so he can continue to guide us in the struggle for a better Nigeria,” he added.
Kwankwaso, who served as governor of Kano State and later as Minister of Defence, remains a central figure in the NNPP and is widely seen as the architect of Yusuf’s political rise. The reaffirmation of their alliance is expected to calm nerves within the party and among supporters, especially as the 2027 general elections begin to loom on the political horizon.
