I am delighted at the invitation extended to me by the Branch to participate in her Annual Law Week being held on 13 – 17 June 2022. I applaud the leadership of the Branch ably led by Mr. Pius Oiwoh for the chosen theme: “SECURITY: PANACEA FOR NATIONAL GROWTH”.
We are undoubtedly living in troubled times in this nation, where our individual and collective psyche is constantly being assaulted by the wanton destruction of lives and properties. Daily we see, hear of and sometimes even experience, the violence being unleashed on us by men of the underworld under the guise of Boko Haram, herdsmen, bandits, terrorists, unknown gunmen, kidnappers, etc. Needless to talk about the level of devastation, carnage, pains and sorrows resulting from the activities of these criminals and perverts.
The subject of SECURITY, which has been the most important in every society, has unfortunately become our everyday concern because of how much it has been threatened, if not completely absent, in our Country.
The place of security in the advancement of any society cannot be gainsaid. The question is, can we move forward as a nation with the current state of things? The answer is a very BIG NO! And neither can we afford not to deal with the situation; we cannot be numbed to our current realities and proceed as though all is well.
The theme of this Law Week is therefore, fitting and timely, as it affords us the opportunity to interrogate the subject. It is my hope and prayer that we will not only rise from this Programme with suggestions on how to recover our Country from the menace of insecurity, but also begin to chart a course for our national economic transformation.
I commend the leadership of the Branch, the Law Week Planning Committee and the good people of Benin Branch for this wonderful programme and for inviting me to be a part of the process of recovering, reforming and repositioning Nigeria; it starts from security. I implore all participants to pay close attention to all that is being said and also make their contributions to the conversations for maximum benefit.
May our gathering be fruitful and May God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
