As part of its activities to mark the 2024 International Day of the Girl-Child, the International Charitable Initiative for Girl Child and Women Development Foundation (ICI-GWODEF) visited and spent quality time with the inmates of the Nigeria Female Correctional Centre at Kirikiri in Lagos State.

NEWSWIRE Law Events magazine’s correspondent reports that the visit, the group’s third to the Center so far, was led by its President, Barrister (Mrs.) Helen Nchedo Ibeji, who was accompanied by other leaders of the the organisation, such as its Vice-President, Barrister (Mrs.) Grace Ezeiruaku, its Assistant General Secretary, Barrister (Mrs.) Nneamaka Agianpuye, as well as its Welfare Secretary, Mrs. Owobi Atu Maria.

Speaking during the visit, Mrs. Helen Okafor and Rev. Bulus Madaki Haruna urged the inmates not to see their present position as the end of their life-journeys, but rather as a stepping-stone towards higher ground. God, they said, was using the opportunity of their incarceration to remold and reshape their lives for future purposes. The speakers also urged the inmates to work hard to facilitate their freedom as soon as possible, as their stay at the Correctional Center was an aberration and an error which can be corrected.

The visit to the Correctional Centre was graced by a large turnout of the group’s members, as they gathered to examine the theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl-Child, namely:

Girl’s Vision for the Future. The message of this year’s commemoration was that a girl with a dream becomes a woman with a vision, and investment in a girl was an investment in a brighter and more equal future. The impetus is on public-spirited individuals to create a world where every girl-child is safe, educated and empowered.

This year’s theme conveys both the need for urgent action and unquenchable hope of a better life for girls and, by extension, women.

NEWSWIRE’s correspondent also reports that one of the highlights of the visit was the distribution of food to the 332 inmates by ICI-GWODEF members, which the inmates received with much enthusiasm and gratitude.
