Ghana suspends boxing after two deaths in six months

Ghana has suspended all boxing activities following the tragic death of professional super-middleweight boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey.

As reported by BBC Sport and Ghana web on Friday, the 32-year-old died on September 23, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, 11 days after suffering severe injuries in a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena.

This marks the second professional boxing death in Ghana within six months. In March, Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju also died after a fight in Accra.

The National Sports Authority (NSA), in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, announced the suspension with immediate effect, citing athlete safety as the top priority.

“The National Sports Authority (NSA), in consultation with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has, with immediate effect, suspended all boxing activities in Ghana.”

“This decision follows the tragic passing of professional boxer Ernest ‘Bahubali’ Akushey after his most recent bout. It reflects the joint commitment of the NSA and the Sports Ministry to prioritise the safety, health, and welfare of athletes,” the statement read.

The NSA revealed that preparations had already been completed for a five-year safety and development plan aimed at improving medical, technical, and regulatory standards in boxing to meet global benchmarks. The reforms will be supervised by a nine-member Interim Management Committee.

The authority emphasised that while the suspension may disrupt immediate sporting activities, it is necessary to safeguard athletes and restore confidence in the sport.

“While the suspension may present immediate challenges, it remains a necessary step to protect lives, preserve the integrity of the sport, and secure its future. It is in line with the committee set up by the Hon. Minister following the death of the Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.”

Boxing remains a deeply rooted sport in Ghana, particularly in the Bukom community — home to world champions like Azumah Nelson.

The recent tragedies have reignited calls for stricter medical protocols, better oversight, and stronger safety measures across the sport.

Authorities say efforts are underway to ensure boxing returns to Ghana under safer, more professional, and globally compliant standards.
