The legal team for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, has knocked some ‘200 lawyers’ who have volunteered to represent Governor Abba Yusuf at the Supreme Court.
A group of 200 lawyers from across 19 northern states declared on Sunday that they would help Yusuf challenge the Court of Appeal judgment which nullified his election and declared Gawuna as the poll winner.
The spokesman for the volunteer lawyers, Yusuf Ibrahim, had said, “We volunteer as private legal practitioners to participate in the litigation in solidarity with Governor Yusuf at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
“We want to represent the truth in the fight to reclaim his mandate and that of the people of Kano State.”
But at a press conference in Kano on Wednesday, Gawuna’s legal team chided the voluteer lawyers.
The secretary of the legal team, Hadiza Ahmad, questioned the basis for the coming together of the 200 lawyers, adding that it was unethical for lawyers to discuss matters pending before the court.
Ahmad said, “The sole recognised association of lawyers is the esteemed Nigerian Bar Association. It’s disheartening to witness these lawyers challenge a court decision while neglecting the vital principle of refraining from public discussions of ongoing legal matters.”
The lawyers added, “The 200 lawyers entangled in this controversy, we implore you to rise above political machinations and permit the court to execute its duties without external interference.”
“Any attempt to tarnish the court’s image or resort to blackmail is unequivocally unacceptable and we wholeheartedly respect the decisions of the court and proudly affirm our support for Dr Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.
“As guardians of justice, lawyers must preserve the integrity of our noble profession, even when faced with unfavorable judgments. Let us collectively champion the rule of law and uphold the dignified essence of our legal system.”
The APC lawyers commended security forces for their relentless effort in maintaining law and order in Kano despite alleged efforts by the Yusuf-led New Nigeria People’s Party and its supporters to cause trouble in the state.
