Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its perceived insensitivity to the economic struggles facing Nigerians. In an open letter titled “President Bola Tinubu, Time is Running Out,” Adams expressed grave concerns about the increasing hardship under the current government.
Adams lamented the historical disappointments in Nigerian leadership since 1960, citing poor management of resources and ineffective governance. He expressed disillusionment with President Tinubu’s campaign promises, noting that many Nigerians were led to believe that Tinubu would surpass the performance of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Reflecting on the deteriorating economic conditions, Adams pointed out the drastic rise in fuel prices: “On May 29, 2023, when you assumed office, the price of a litre of fuel was under N200. Today, it exceeds N1000.” He criticized the administration’s reform efforts, highlighting the severe depreciation of the Naira: “In May 2023, the Naira to Dollar exchange rate was less than N740. Now, it has surpassed N1,600.”
Adams also condemned the surge in insecurity nationwide, describing the situation as if “blood-thirsty maniacs have been unleashed on Nigerians from the deepest part of hell.”
In closing, Adams urged President Tinubu to rethink his policies, emphasizing that the severe increase in fuel prices could trigger widespread crisis: “Mr. President, don’t you think the drastic hike in fuel prices is a recipe for disaster? Nigerians can no longer endure this economic hardship.”
