The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) Dr. Monday Onyekachi Ubani, recently addressed a number of issues Nigerians are currently facing, most notably the sudden removal of fuel subsidy and its severe impact of the generality of the Nigerians, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be sensitive to the people’s pains as a result of the move. “Salary increases for civil servants, whose population is infinitesimal compared to millions outside government employment, he said, would not be enough to solve the present crisis, adding that a more drastic and well-thought-out economic package should be put in place to cushion the harsh effects of the new policy.
Ubani made these remarks at a Press Conference at the NBA Ikeja Branch Auditorium ahead of the forthcoming NBA-SPIDEL Annual Conference, scheduled to be held in Ikeja, Lagos.
NEWSWIRE Law and Events Magazine correspondent in Lagos reports that the press parley was held to intimate the public about the theme of the SPIDEL Conference, namely, “Post-Election Nigeria: The Judiciary in the Eye of the Storm.”
While acknowledging the imperative of ending the ‘scam’ known as fuel subsidy, Ubani however maintained that the process and procedure for the removal was faulty. “We welcome efforts by the government amid consultations to birth palliatives aimed at alleviating the harshness of the sudden removal,” he said, adding that these measures should have preceded the announcement of the removal of subsidy.
Also at the press parley were Mr. Seyi Olawunmi (Chairman of the Conference’s Local Organizing Committee and member of the NBA, Ikeja Branch); Mr. Chisom Onuoha (Secretary of the LOC) and Mr. Emeka Nwadioke (Council Member of the NBA-SPIDEL).
Speaking on the Conference theme, the SPIDEL Chairman encouraged the nation’s judicial officers to be bold in challenging electoral violations, insisting that the vote of the majority should not be substituted for the minority. “Our faith in the Judiciary should remain unshaken,” he said, “as those who deserve justice shall certainly be served with justice without fear or favor.”
He disclosed that the SPIDEL Conference, scheduled for June 20 to 23, 2023, would attract lawyers, Judges, academia and professionals from across the Federation, and promises to be an intellectual feast.
It was also disclosed that there will be a number of mouthwatering incentives for young lawyers to enhance their participation at the Conference, as there will also be technical sessions, Aerobics/Sports, Lunch, Dinner, Cocktail and much more.
The Press Conference also addressed matters of topical interest in the country, such as the suspension of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele and the pending investigation into his tenure; the Air Nigeria controversy; the battle against corruption and mismanagement of public funds; the crisis in the Nassarawa State House of Assembly, and others.
The forthcoming Ikeja Conference will be Dr Ubani’s last as SPIDEL Chairman.
According to NEWSWIRE Magazine’s correspondent at the press conference, the keynote Speaker at the SPIDEL confab will be the foremost human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana SAN, while the Opening Session would be chaired by former NBA President, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, OON, SAN (during whose tenure as NBA head, the NBA-SPIDEL was established). The Hon. Justice Amina Augie of the Supreme Court will feature as a Guest Speaker during the Opening Ceremony. Also expected at the Opening Ceremony are the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola; the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Abia State counterpart, Dr. Alex Otti, as well as Senators and Members of the House of Representatives.
