The Federal Road Safety Corps has reported a total of 7,798 arrests in just two months as part of an intensified crackdown on number plate-related offences.

The surge in arrests comes as the corps works to address the increasing problem of fake vehicle registration plates, which pose significant risks to public safety and national security.

FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, disclosed the figures in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the FRSC’s crackdown has garnered widespread attention, with the National Assembly offering its full support for the initiative.

On Tuesday, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC, Abiodun Adesida, publicly pledged the Assembly’s backing during a meeting with the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and committee members.

The meeting was convened to address the alarming rise in fake number plates, which complicate security efforts and threaten road safety.

At the meeting, the Corps Marshal outlined the steps being taken to combat the proliferation of fake number plates, including efforts to enhance the National Vehicle Identification Scheme Portal

He emphasised that vehicles with fake registration numbers would not be permitted on Nigerian roads, despite resistance from some vehicle owners using counterfeit plates.

The Corps Marshal also provided a detailed overview of ongoing efforts to tackle number plate-related offenses, noting a disturbing trend of motorists flouting the law by using fake or unauthorised plates.

“This trend,” the Corps Marshal stated, “poses significant security risks as it hinders efforts by security agencies to track and identify vehicles involved in criminal activities.”

The National Assembly’s endorsement of the FRSC’s efforts is seen as a vital step in strengthening the fight against the circulation of fake number plates.

Adesida called for greater collaboration between the Assembly and the Corps, stressing the need to strengthen laws to hold those using fake plates accountable.

In conclusion, the Corps Marshal urged all Nigerians to support the FRSC’s ongoing efforts by ensuring they use legitimate number plates and report any instances of fake plates to the nearest FRSC Command
