On Monday, the 4th of April, 2022, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Lagos, won a case in conviction and sentencing of Mr. Eke Kanu, (63years) to life imprisonment by the sexual offences High Court, Ikeja before Justice Soladoye for Raping his 19years old daughter after he pleaded guilty to the offence.
On Friday, 12th June 2020 FIDA received a distress call through a sexual whistle blower of a sixty three(63) year old Mr Eke Kanu who has been sexually abusing his daughter at Solebo Area of Ikorodu, Lagos after chasing his wife and two sons away with matchet, leaving the daughter alone with him.
Mr Kanu sexually assaulted her and intimidated her on several occasions with cutlass anytime she refused him.
FIDA Lagos swung into action through her now Secretary, Adefowoke Ayo-Ponle and other members living around the area. Mr. Eke Kanu was immediately arrested by men of the Nigerian Police, Igbogbo Division Ikorodu and the matter was therefore transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.
Mr Kanu was arraigned at Yaba Magistrate Court, and the case moved to Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court, Roseline Omotoso, Court House Ikeja, before Honourable Justice Soladoye after the DPP’s advice was received.
FIDA counsel in court on Monday, Chioma Ewereji reported that the court, in convicting the defendant stated that this sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
