The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Lagos unequivocally condemns the intolerable act of child abuse inflicted upon a three-year-old pupil by one Stella Nwadigo, a teacher at Christ-Mitots School, Ikorodu. The disturbing footage of this incident has rightfully sparked widespread outrage and underscores the urgent need for accountability and reinforced child protection measures in schools.
As an organization dedicated to protecting the rights and welfare of women and children, FIDA Lagos is deeply concerned by this violation of a child’s fundamental rights. Schools must remain sanctuaries for learning, growth, and development, free from any form of abuse or maltreatment.
We commend the swift action taken by the Lagos State Police Command in apprehending the alleged teacher, Stella Nwadigo, and urge law enforcement to pursue this case to the latter to ensure justice is served. This must stand as a strong deterrent to others entrusted with the care and education of children.
FIDA Lagos calls on the Lagos State Government to take immediate and decisive action, including:
Strengthening Child Protection Policies: Implement stricter laws and regulatory frameworks to safeguard children in schools.
Educator Training Programs: Mandate continuous professional development for teachers, emphasizing child protection, behavioural management, and ethical responsibilities.
Effective Reporting and Response Systems: Establish accessible and transparent mechanisms for reporting and addressing cases of abuse in educational institutions.
As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring justice and protecting vulnerable members of society, FIDA Lagos operates a free weekly legal clinic at our secretariat located at 14/16 Makoko Road, off Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba, Lagos. We invite members of the public to report cases of abuse or seek legal advice and support. FIDA Lagos is resolute in its mission to prevent any child from enduring avoidable abuse of any nature and to ensure that victims receive the justice they deserve.
FIDA Lagos stands in solidarity with the family of the young victim and the concerned parents of Christ-Mitots School. We reaffirm our dedication to advocating for policies that promote the welfare of children and a society free from abuse and injustice.
Together, we can create a world where every child is valued, protected, and empowered.
