Angry residents in Abuja have criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the lockdown of major roads across the nation’s capital, describing the development as “punitive” and disruptive to daily life.
The residents expressed frustration and anger following the lockdown of major roads in the capital, including Maitama, Karu, Orozo, Mararaba-Nyanya, and Gwagwalada, where armed security operatives mounted roadblocks and restricted movement.
According to a resident who identified himself simply as Bob, the sudden closure of key routes and the heavy presence of security operatives created unnecessary hardship for commuters, small business owners, and emergency service providers.
He said several motorists were stranded for hours as security personnel mounted roadblocks at strategic junctions, turning back vehicles and enforcing movement restrictions without what he described as “adequate prior notice.”
“People woke up to see blocked roads and armed officers everywhere. You don’t declare a curfew on election day; it is supposed to be a movement restriction. This is not Port Harcourt; this is Abuja. This nonsense must stop. Many people had no idea of the level of restriction that would be imposed,” he said.
Other residents were seen expressing their displeasure in several videos posted on their social media accounts hurling insults on the Minister for the untold hardship he had made them to pass through because of area council elections.
The resident questioned the rationale behind the scale of the lockdown and urged authorities to adopt measures that balance security concerns with the economic and social realities of residents.
The situation has sparked widespread anger, with residents insisting that better communication and less restrictive alternatives should be explored.
