Extrajudicial Killings: Police Review Use of Firearms

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced moves to revise the use of firearms by its personnel as part of the reforms of the organisation to address extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses by policemen.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, during the presentation of the guide on the review of the Force order 237, which was done in collaboration with the International Committee on Red Cross, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, said it would address extrajudicial killings by operatives.

He commended the ICRC and expressed optimism that the police would be better off in the discharge of their duties.

Delegate to Police and Security Forces, ICRC, Pietro Tili, said the organization had been providing training and technical support services to the police in order to meet up with international best practices in the discharge of their duties.

He promised more support for the force.

Retired Assistant Inspector -General of Police, Austin Iwar, who led the ICRC delegation to the force headquarters, admonished all police officers and men to attend all the training programmes designed to empower and build their professional capacities.
