Electricity supply restoration begins hours after national grid collapse

Electricity supply restoration has begun across electricity distribution companies after the national grid collapsed for the first time in 2026.

Eko DisCo, in a notice on Friday, confirmed that power restoration from the grid has resumed.

The DisCo said bulk electricity supply is being progressively restored as of the time of filing this report.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) said Friday’s collapse was linked to the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines, alongside the disconnection of some grid-connected generating units, events that collectively triggered the system failure.

As of 6:21 pm on Friday, data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator showed that electricity allocation to DisCos stood at 235 megawatts.

“Electricity supply has been successfully restored to Abuja, Osogbo, Benin, Onitsha, Sakete, Jebba, Kainji, Shiroro, and parts of Lagos, while restoration efforts are continuing progressively in other parts of the country,” NISO stated.

Earlier, Abuja DisCo confirmed that a system disturbance occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026, around 12:40 pm, after the national grid recorded zero power allocation to DisCos.

The development threw Africa’s most populous country into total darkness.
