A veteran journalist and high chief in Ilawe Ekiti, Ajibade Olubunmi, has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, Mr Joseph Eribo, over an alleged assassination attempt on his life.
Olubunmi, who is the Odofin of Irorin Quarter in the community and the media adviser to the Alawe of Ilawe, Oba Adebanji Alabi, alleged recently that three men, armed with dangerous weapons, assaulted him during an official engagement in the quarters, adding that he escaped being shot by the whiskers.
He urged the police to protect him as the concerned people were still moving freely in the community, evading police arrest and boasting that nothing would happen to them.
He appealed to the police commissioner, “Kindly intervene before these people carry out their dastardly mission.”
In the petition, the veteran journalist stated, “On Saturday, 15th March 2025, I was presiding over our enlarged family (Aderuku House) meeting inside Owa Oruku hall in Irorin Quarter, Ilawe Ekiti, when suddenly three wild-looking hefty men from Ororin House, who are not members of our family rushed inside our family hall facing me directly, threatening me, pointing cudgels and dangerous weapons, cursing me and at the same time, one of them was seen pulling out a pistol to shoot me
“When I stood up, I saw another group surrounding the hall. This was around 6 pm.
“The intervention of members of our family prevented my being shot. The police were called and three policemen on patrol came, but the three attackers ran away with other members.”
According to Olubunmi, the police traced them to their hideout but claimed that a prominent person prevented them from being dragged to the police station.
“The police said that the man promised to bring the culprits to the police station the following day, Sunday, 16th March, but till now, the culprits have not been arrested and the man, who assured the police, failed to bring them.
“The police at Ilawe-Ekiti know them because they saw them,” he stated, alleging that the culprits were enjoying the shield of a prominent person
