EFCC nabs 20 over alleged vote trading in FCT polls, recovers N13.5m

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested 20 suspects over alleged electoral offences during the February 21, 2026, Federal capital territory (FCT) Area Council elections, as authorities moved to curb vote trading and related violations during the exercise.

In a statement shared on its official X page, the commission said the suspects were apprehended across the FCT for offences including vote buying, vote selling and obstruction of electoral officers, involving a total sum of N17,218,700.

The agency disclosed that “one of the suspects was arrested with a sum of N13,500,000 in a car parked beside a polling booth in kwali local government area.”

According to the EFCC, the arrests were made in different locations within the territory, with two suspects picked up in Abaji, nine in Gwagwalada, four in Kuje and four others in Kwali.

It stated that the operation formed part of efforts to address electoral malpractice and ensure compliance with the law during the local government polls.

The commission added that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects would face prosecution upon conclusion of the process.

“The suspects will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations,” the agency stated
