The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in the Republic of Benin, describing it as a cowardly assault aimed at destabilizing the region.
The attack, which occurred on April 17, 2025, claimed several lives and left many injured, sparking outrage across the subregion.
In a statement issued in Abuja, ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the government and people of Benin. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The ECOWAS Commission reiterates its unwavering support and full solidarity with His Excellency the President of the Republic of Benin, the Government, and the people of Benin during this difficult time,” the statement read.
Dr. Touray emphasized the bloc’s commitment to supporting Benin in its fight against terrorism, noting that regional unity and collaboration are crucial in confronting the growing security threats in West Africa.
Highlighting the persistent and complex nature of terrorism in the region, ECOWAS called for closer cooperation among member states, especially those sharing borders and facing direct exposure to extremist violence.
The Commission also underscored the importance of collective action, including joint military efforts, intelligence sharing, and the operationalization of the ECOWAS Standby Force to deliver a coordinated response to terrorist activities.
“ECOWAS remains firmly committed to the implementation of its regional counter-terrorism strategy,” the statement added, urging international partners to continue supporting national and regional efforts to defeat terrorism and restore stability across West Africa.
