The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed ongoing efforts to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

Speaking in Abuja during a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum, which comprises lawmakers from the five State Houses of Assembly in the South East, Kalu expressed optimism that the efforts being made behind the scenes will soon yield positive results.

“I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to come out. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers,” Kalu assured.

During the meeting, led by Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Kalu emphasized the need for unity among political leaders in the South East. He encouraged lawmakers to collaborate and support regional development initiatives.

He urged the legislators to back the ongoing constitutional amendment process and fully support the South East Development Commission (SEDC), which aims to address the region’s developmental needs.

Kalu called for collective support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, stressing that it has the best interests of Ndi-Igbo and Nigerians at heart.

“The power of networking is more than money. Unity is power. We hardly recognize our own and lose a lot because of it,” he said. “We need to end the sit-at-home. People are destroying themselves. We need to come together. The power of unity and growth is important.”

Kalu highlighted key priorities, including security, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and technology. He urged lawmakers to participate actively in the constitution amendment process, with public hearings proposed for the first and second quarters of next year.

As members of the South East Legislative Forum, you need a common legislative agenda. Birth ideas and think about how to utilize them. That is why I want you to support the SEDC,” he stated.

In his remarks, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, leader of the South East Legislators Forum, described the visit as a show of solidarity and respect for the Deputy Speaker as the political leader of the region.

“In the political setting today, you are our leader. You are the leader of Ndi-Igbo. We came to pay a solidarity visit and pledge our homage as legislators from Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo States,” Ikoro said.

The meeting underscored the importance of unity and strategic collaboration among South East leaders to advance the region’s development and address its challenges.
